5 Things to Bring to Your Next Doctor’s Visit

Make the most out of your next doctor’s visit – check out our list below for the 5 things to bring:

  • Medical History Card

Ideally, your doctor will have your full medical history on file, but many times, patients will visit more than one doctor or specialist. It can be helpful to bring along a physical record of your key information including medical conditions, dates of past surgeries, current medications, doctors’ names and contact information, health insurance and any drug allergies.

  • Your Current Medications

It can be helpful to bring a list of the names and dosages of the prescription and non-prescription (over-the-counter, vitamins and herbal) medications you are currently taking. Too often, patients are unable to remember the names or prescribed dosages of their medications, making it hard for your doctor to ensure all of your medications are effectively working together.

  • List of Questions or Concerns

It is important to come to your next doctor’s appointment with a list of questions or concerns prepared in advance. Brainstorm your questions well before your visit; it may even be a good idea to bring with you a journal containing any symptoms or changes in your daily health with which you are concerned.

  • Notebook and Pen

Remember that it is okay to take notes during your visit to make it easier for you to remember any information or directions given by your doctor. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or for clarification if you do not understand something.

  • Friend or Family Member

Sometimes visiting your doctor can be frightening, and you may even feel a little uneasy. It can be helpful to bring a trusted family member or friend with you to your next appointment; they can not only help to ease your anxiety by providing moral support but can also be helpful in reminding you to address your primary questions and concerns to ensure you are satisfied with your visit.
