Hypertension Care in Houma

High blood pressure can gradually affect the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, brain, and other organs. SLMA provides evaluation, treatment, medication management, and ongoing primary care for adults with hypertension in Houma and surrounding communities.

What Is Hypertension?

Hypertension is the medical term for high blood pressure. Blood pressure measures the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps and rests. The first number in a blood pressure reading is the systolic pressure, which measures pressure while the heart is pumping. The second number is the diastolic pressure, which measures pressure while the heart is resting between beats. Blood pressure changes throughout the day. A diagnosis usually requires properly measured readings over time, along with consideration of the patient’s health history and overall cardiovascular risk.

Why Blood Pressure Control Matters

Hypertension frequently causes no obvious symptoms. Over time, uncontrolled blood pressure may increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure, kidney disease, vision problems, and damage to the arteries. Early detection and consistent management can reduce these risks. Treatment may include home monitoring, nutrition changes, physical activity, weight management, medication, and routine follow-up.

What to Expect During a Hypertension Evaluation

Your provider will review your recent blood pressure readings, medications, medical history, family history, nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and other risk factors. Blood pressure may be measured more than once during the visit. Your provider may also recommend home blood pressure monitoring to determine how readings change outside the medical office. Depending on your health history and results, additional evaluation may include blood tests, urine testing, an EKG, or other testing to assess cardiovascular and kidney health.

How Is Hypertension Managed?

A hypertension care plan may include reducing sodium intake, improving nutrition, increasing appropriate physical activity, reaching a healthier weight, improving sleep, limiting alcohol, stopping tobacco use, and managing stress. Medication may also be recommended based on blood pressure readings, age, medical history, cardiovascular risk, and response to lifestyle changes. Successful hypertension management requires consistent follow-up. Your provider may adjust treatment over time and monitor for side effects, complications, and changes in your overall health.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have high blood pressure without symptoms?
Yes. Many people with hypertension feel normal, which is why regular blood pressure checks are important.
Does one high reading mean I have hypertension?
One reading may be affected by stress, activity, caffeine, pain, medication, or the measurement process. Your provider may use repeated office readings, home monitoring, or ambulatory monitoring before confirming a diagnosis.
Will I need blood pressure medication forever?
Treatment varies by patient. Some people require long-term medication, while others may reduce their readings through lifestyle changes or treatment of another health condition. Medication should only be changed under a healthcare provider’s direction.
