About South Louisiana Medical Associates

South Louisiana Medical Associates located in Houma was formed in 1978 to serve as an educational affiliate of the Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation.

SLMA was founded with a public mission including teaching and training of residents in all major specialties, providing them hands-on experiences under the direct supervision of a full-time medical staff. A "Provider" Partnership was forged with Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center to deliver these services.

SLMA continues to employ more than 100 medical providers and host a successful internal medicine residency program at Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center. Our providers have helped educate physicians, medical residents, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and nurses, many of whom continue serving patients throughout South Louisiana.

The mission of South Louisiana Medical Associates incorporates the delivery of both high quality medical services and graduate medical education through accountability, sound fiscal practices, scholarly activity through research, and employee satisfaction.

Our medical specialties include primary care, cardiology, gastroenterology, pediatrics, surgery, rheumatology, sports medicine and many more.

Our Women's Clinic offers evaluation, treatment, education and management of obstetric and gynecological services. Our Pediatric Clinic provides safe preventative and therapeutic care to help children stay healthy as they grow into adulthood.

SLMA serves patients at Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center, the SLMA Comprehensive Health Clinic and Skin Bar Medi-Spa in Houma, and our Morgan City clinic. SLMA providers also care for patients at hospitals across the region, including Terrebonne General, Teche Regional, Chabert Medical Center, St. Anne General Medical Center, Thibodaux Regional Medical Center and others. For nearly 50 years, SLMA physicians have provided care at Chabert Medical Center, supporting a longstanding mission of caring for medically underserved populations. That mission continues through our partnership with Life Coast Community Health Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center Look-Alike serving communities across South Louisiana.

SLMA has received the Quality Champion Certificate from AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana and the Physician Summit Award from Louisiana Healthcare Connections. SLMA also earned five-star quality ratings based on CMS benchmarks for three measures: diabetes management, blood pressure control and breast cancer screening.

In 2025, three SLMA physicians received UnitedHealthcare's United Hero Award for Patient Experience, an honor earned by fewer than 5% of qualified providers nationwide.
