Sports EKG Screening in Houma

A sports EKG records the electrical activity of an athlete’s heart and may help identify rhythm abnormalities or other findings that deserve further evaluation. SLMA provides sports medicine care for athletes, students, and active adults in Houma and surrounding communities.

What Is a Sports EKG?

An electrocardiogram, commonly called an EKG or ECG, is a quick, noninvasive test that records the heart’s electrical signals. Small adhesive electrodes are placed on the chest, arms, and legs while the machine measures the heart’s rhythm and electrical activity. A sports EKG may be included as part of a broader cardiovascular evaluation. The results should be interpreted alongside the athlete’s medical history, family history, symptoms, physical examination, and level of activity.

Why Heart Screening Matters for Athletes

Regular physical activity provides significant health benefits. Intense exercise can also place additional demands on the cardiovascular system. Some heart conditions produce few or no noticeable symptoms before creating a problem. An EKG may identify certain rhythm disturbances or electrical patterns that require additional evaluation. It does not detect every possible heart condition and should be treated as one part of an athlete’s overall medical assessment.

What to Expect During a Sports EKG

A sports EKG is generally completed within several minutes. You will lie still while electrodes are attached to your skin. The test does not send electricity into your body and is usually painless. Your provider will review the tracing for heart rate, rhythm, conduction patterns, and other findings. Athletic training can cause normal changes in the heart, so EKG results should be interpreted within the context of the individual athlete. An abnormal or unclear result does not automatically mean an athlete has heart disease. Depending on the findings, the provider may recommend additional testing, specialist evaluation, activity modifications, or routine follow-up.

What Happens After the Screening?

Your next step will depend on your symptoms, history, examination, and EKG findings. Some athletes may receive reassurance and continue normal activity. Others may need an echocardiogram, exercise test, heart monitor, laboratory testing, or referral to a cardiovascular specialist. SLMA’s primary care sports medicine team can help coordinate appropriate evaluation and guide athletes and families through the next steps.

Frequently asked questions

Does a sports physical include an EKG?
A standard sports physical does not always include an EKG. Your provider may recommend one based on symptoms, medical history, family history, age, sport, or other risk factors.
Can an athlete have a normal EKG and still have a heart condition?
Yes. An EKG provides valuable information about the heart’s electrical activity, though it cannot identify every structural, genetic, or cardiovascular condition.
Will an abnormal EKG prevent someone from playing sports?
An abnormal result may lead to additional testing before clearance. The final recommendation depends on the finding, the athlete’s condition, and the medical evaluation.
